Southern Illinois University wins top grant from U.S. Department of Energy

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - SIU beat out hundreds of other schools for one of nine grants for clean energy.

The United State Department of Energy will award SIU $300,000 to continue research on making coal burning power plants more efficient.

Researchers say by coating coal turbines and boilers with a corrosion and heat-resistant material made of titanium powders, the engine that turns coal into energy will become more efficient.

"This will reduce the amount of coal that will be used for the same amount of energy production and at the same time have clean air," said Dr. Rasit Koc, SIU Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & energy processes.

Researchers say a more efficient coal plant is be better for the environment, because burning less coal means emitting less carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas.
