Southern Illinois University pitcher Nathan Dorris was drafted in the 17th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago Cubs Wednesday morning.
Dorris was selected 524th overall and was the second Saluki to be drafted this year.
First baseman Chris Serritella was drafted in the fourth round of this years draft.
Dorris is originally from Marion, IL and prior to becoming a Saluki played two years at Rend Lake College.
At SIU this season Dorris was ranked in the top 10 in the Missouri Valley Conference with seven wins and 80 strikeouts.
"It's really exciting, especially growing up a Cubs fan," Dorris said according to an SIU news release. "To have a chance to be with your childhood team is a special honor."
Dorris was only a junior last season so he still has the opportunity to return to Souther Illinois for his senior season.
The deadline for recently drafted players is July 13.
