BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A Butler County man was taken into custody accused of shooting his stepson late Friday night.

Richard Douglas Wolfe, 55, of Poplar Bluff faces assault second degree. He was taken to the Butler County Jail on $20,000 cash or surety bond.

According to Butler County Sheriff's Office, it happened around 11:30 p.m. at a home in a trailer park off of County Road 312 in the Haystack Lane area.

Deputies say they responded to a domestic dispute between Wolfe and 23-year-old Cody Daily.

Richard D. Wolfe then allegedly shot Daily with a .380 semi-automatic handgun in the abdomen.

A neighbor describes what she heard and saw.

"My daughter came in the house and said, I think I heard a gunshot," said neighbor Sandy Est. "I'm like no, no and she said yeah, I think I did. So I got up and came outside, and there were two police cars out here. And officers out here, they had dog out here and shining lights."

Deputies say Wolfe was taken into custody on the scene.

According to the probable cause statement, a deputy was called to 50 Haystack Lane around 11 p.m. Friday. When the deputy arrived, Wolfe was holding a towel on Daily's stomach. Two women were also attending to Daily.

Wolfe told the deputy that Daily was intoxicated and had tried to assault him, according to the probable cause statement.

Wolfe claimed Daily had assaulted him of a prior occasion, but that when he shot him Daily did not have a weapon, according to the probable cause.

Daily was taken to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center and stabilized. He was then flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital for further treatment. Sheriff Mark Dobbs says Daily had non-life threatening injuries.
