MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A World War II veteran and his son recently returned from what they are calling a trip of a lifetime.

That veteran got to see the World War II memorial for the very first time.

It was an all expense paid trip through the Jeremy Bloom Foundation out of Denver, Colorado, and it's one that Andy Dunavant and his son, Tommy, will never forget.

"The trip was once in a lifetime," says Tommy Dunavant.

Tommy has always been close to his dad, Andy.

But now, the two share a common bond no one can take away.

"You walk into that memorial, when you walk through that arch and that wreath is over your head, it just makes cold chills go all over your body," says Andy Dunavant.

During recent trip to Washington, Andy got to see the World War II memorial for the very first time.

"As we were going around there was a lot of school aged children there. As soon as they found out he was a World War II veteran, they swarmed him," Tommy Dunavant adds.

Andy Dunavant served as an Army surveyor from 1943 until 1946 in World War II.

He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He also served as a supply sergeant during the Korean conflict.

And as this decorated soldier saw his memorial for the first time, he could hardly hold back the tears.

"I probably would have never gotten to go up there if it weren't for that," continues Andy Dunavant.

"I made it a point to look at him when we walked in and to see the emotion he was feeling.  It was good," says Tommy Dunavant.
