Buildings evacuated after gas leak on SIU campus

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Several buildings on the Southern Illinois University campus have been evacuated after a gas leak.

SIU spokesperson Rod Sievers says crews building a new pedestrian mall hit an unmarked 2 inch gas line as they were tearing out concrete.

Shryock, Parkinson, Faner, Allyn buildings were evacuated.

There are not many students on campus since it is between spring and summer classes. Some intersession classes were being held in Faner.

The gas leak was capped at about 11 a.m.

Over the next few hours, Ameren crews will make permanent repairs and SIU crews will survey the evacuated buildings to ensure that the gas has dissipated.

All is expected to be back to normal about 1 p.m. and that's when evacuated employees will be able return to their offices.

No one was hurt.
