Teen drowns in farm pond

THOMPSONVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

Authorities are investigating the drowning death of a Franklin County teenager.

According to Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler, 18-year-old Matthew Kuhns of Mulkeytown was working on a dock at a farm pond near Thompsonville Saturday.

Late in the afternoon, Kuhns reportedly jumped from the dock into the water to cool off.

His friends later told investigators that when Kuhns surfaced he seemed to be struggling. The friends jumped in the water to pull the teen out, but by the time they reached Kuhns the teen had already gone under water. The friends could not locate Kuhns and called 9-11

An hour later, dive teams pulled Kuhns' body from the water. Paramedics attempted CPR at the scene, but neither they nor doctors at Franklin Hospital could revive the teen.

Funeral arrangements for Matthew Kuhns are pending through Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.
