Officials: Look for permits on carnival rides

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Department of Labor is reminding families visiting carnivals and amusement parks this season to look for current permit stickers on the rides.

The department conducts safety inspections and permits only rides and attractions that meet established safety guidelines.

The department inspects nearly 5,000 rides annually at parks, go-kart tracks, inflatable jump facilities, traveling carnivals and fairs. Permits are issued if the rides meet safety requirements under state law and manufacturers' standards.

Consumers can report unsafe conditions, accidents or rides operating without state permits to local law enforcement agencies and the Department of Labor.

An example of a current permit sticker is posted online at the department's website.
