CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A man accused of using the Carbondale police chief's gun to commit murder has pleaded guilty.
Matthew Jones pleaded guilty to a charge of first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Deaunta Spencer.
Jones could be spend anywhere from 20 to 60 years in prison as part of the plea.
Jackson County State's Attorney Mike Wepsiec plans to ask for an extended sentencing of 45 to 85 years because Jones used a gun to kill Spencer.
Investigators say Jones shot and killed Spencer on September, 14, 2011 in the 400 block of North Brush Street. He allegedly used a gun stolen from the Carbondale police chief to commit the crime.
Jones will be sentenced on July 25 at 10:30 a.m.
