MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

Saturday was Armed Forces Day across the Heartland, a day created back in 1949 to honor our military.

The Jefferson County Historic Village in Mount Vernon set the stage Saturday for an authentic World War II mess tent.

Veterans prepared a meal with original World War II cooking utensils.

The presentation and meal are the work of a Vietnam Veteran who wanted to show his respect for his fellow servicemen.

"We just have a passion for the veterans, and we feel that we have an obligation, that if we study it and research it, that we have to pass on their honor and their sacrifice and their memory," said Byron Vinyard, a US Navy Vietnam Veteran. "And it's our obligation."

Vinyard and crew served up a big free meal to veterans and their families.

The event continues Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
