Children escape house fire in Gideon, car vandalism

GIDEON, MO (KFVS) - Police are investigating after a home caught fire in Gideon with children inside Tuesday.

New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens says the fire broke out on Second Street Tuesday.

There were children in the home at the time the fire started, with their Grandfather. A neighbor came and woke the family up. The neighbor says at first she thought it was a bonfire, but then realized the home was on fire and called 9-1-1.

Sheriff Stevens says the sheriff's department and the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.

Stevens says a car South of town was also vandalized the same night. He said a racially discriminatory word was written on it.  He says they are not sure if the fire and the car vandalism are related.
