Fire damages Metropolis church

METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) - A fire on Saturday evening heavily damaged a Metropolis church.

It happened at the Upper Salem Church at 4153 Upper Salem Road.

Chief Mike Childers at Massac County Fire Protection District says they got the call around 9:15 p.m. on the fire. And that the fire is not being considered suspicious at this time.

The exact cause though is still unknown. The building suffered major damage, according to  Chief Childers.

He says flames were coming through the roof when they arrived on the scene. And they called in mutual aid from Metropolis and Brookport Fire Departments.

They were able to save the organ and some sound equipment out of the church before the fire got into the congregation area.

According to Metropolis Fire Department Captain Chad Parker, Metropolis fire crews provided one ladder truck as mutual aid to the fire at the Upper Salem Church.
