ROCKWOOD, IL (KFVS) -

In Jacob, Illinois the post office there will stay open but may become far less convenient.

That's because the postal service plans to reduce office hours here from six to just two hours per day.

In Rockwood, another town previously slated to lose its post office.  Hours are slated to be cut in half from eight to four hours per day.

Still, folks in town say this comes as a victory as they fought hard to keep their zip code.

"We had a lot of support out in the community," said Virginia Mansker.  "We had one of the largest postal meeting that they held in this closing deal, prior. The church would not hold them, they were standing outside."

The Rockwood and Jacob post offices would have closed with about 3700 other low-revenue post offices throughout the country sometime after May 15.

It was part of a multi-billion dollar postal cost-cutting effort to stave off a postal service bankruptcy.

The postal service now plans to seek regulatory approval for the new plan and get community input on those changes in office hours, which could take several months.
