A man charged with the murder of his girlfriend over the weekend pleaded not guilty Monday.

Saturday the New Madrid County Sheriff's Office and New Madrid County Coroner's Office were called to investigate the death of a 36-year-old Maria "Linda" Slavings from Tallapoosa, Missouri inside a home on County Road 243.

She was Richmond's girlfriend, according to New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens.

Investigators say Slavings died from a gunshot wound.

Monday court records revealed more about what happened. According to court records New Madrid county authorities received a call of a suicide Saturday afternoon, but once they arrived to the home on county road 243 they say they discovered a crime scene. Records tell us Richmond told members of the Highway Patrol he heart gunshots and went into the house to find Slavings bleeding.

Deputies say Richmond told them several different stories involving the two playing with a .22 caliber rifle.

Eventually, according to Court records, Richmond said Slavings put the barrel of the rifle inside her mouth and he pulled the trigger causing the rifle to discharge for the second time killing her.

Richmond waived his preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

He is due back in court on May 24 at 9 a.m. His bond set at $100,000 cash only.
