Springfield tourism office promotes 'staycations'

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -

Visits to Abraham Lincoln's home and other historic sites in the Illinois state capital rose by 20% in the first three months of the year. Tourism officials want to keep the trend going by encouraging area residents to consider "staycations."

A campaign dubbed Hometown Travelers begins this weekend with a weeklong display at Springfield's Union Station Visitors Center. Exhibits highlight attractions from Route 66 to the Illinois State Military Museum.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that such attractions drew 274,000 people in the first quarter of the year - a 20% jump over the same period last year.

Tourism director Kim Rosendahl of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau says she wants local residents to also take advantage of what the area has to offer.
