Man killed when truck hauling coal crashes

GALLATIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A 72-year-old man was killed in a crash Wednesday morning in Gallatin County.

Glendell P. Shewmaker, 72, of Norris City, Ill. was driving a 2006 Freightliner hauling a dump trailer with coal eastbound Illinois Route 13. Illinois State Police say he crossed the westbound lane a half mile east of Old Shawneetown Road and went through a guardrail, before coming to rest down an embankment on the north side of the road.

Shewmaker was ejected and was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

It happened about 8:35 a.m.

There was extensive damage to the vehicle, guardrail, and the entire load of coal was spilled.

Illinois State Police was assisted at the crash scene by the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department, Shawneetown Police Department, Shawneetown Fire Department, Gallatin County Ambulance Service, and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
