The first official welcome sign for the City of Marion is now standing along West Main Street, across from the Marion VA Hospital.
The sign is the project of Eagle Scout Preston Lunon with Troop 7021, in Marion. Lunon says the idea for the sign came to him as he was driving around southern Illinois.
"What first inspired me to do this was that I saw other towns that I drove through, I'd see these signs that were nice," said Preston Lunon. "And I always thought to myself why doesn't Marion have a sign?"
So Lunon teamed up with Liberty Signs in Marion and came up with a design and color scheme.
And on Saturday morning Marion's Mayor Bob Butler was on hand to official recognize the sign, and the work of Eagle Scout Lunon.
"Scouts are supposed to be physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. I think that putting up this sign for the City of Marion is an indication of what scouting is all about," said Mayor Butler.
Not only are visitors welcomed to the City of Marion on their way into town, they're also thanked on their way out on the backside of the new sign.
