Man arrested following convenience store robbery

PORTAGEVILLE, MO (KFVS) - Portageville Police are investigating an overnight armed robbery at a gas station.

At around midnight Saturday morning, the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department notified police in Portageville of an ongoing robbery at the Casey's General Store.

When officers arrived, the alleged robber had already fled the scene.

The store clerk told police the suspect was armed with scissors and the clerk had fought with the robber the whole time he was in the store.

The suspect made off with approximately $500 in cash.

There was a vehicle parked near the Casey's with two occupants inside. When police questioned the man and woman in the car, they learned they were involved in the robbery and were arrested.

Police then searched a large ditch in the area behind the Casey's store and found the suspect lying in the water.

The man was taken into custody without further incident.

Police say the clerk was able to identify the man in the ditch as the robber, and surveillance video was able to confirm his identity.

Officers say they arrested 32-year-old Bobby Mays, 37-year-old Steve Wigfall and 25-year-old Christina Heffley. All three are from Portageville and are currently being held in the New Madrid County Jail.

Formal charges are pending.
