SIUC campus fire evacuates building, damages lab

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A fire on the Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale Thursday evening evacuated a building and damaged a lab.

According to university spokesman Rod Seivers, it happened last night around 8:20 p.m. in the D-wing of the engineering building.

Sievers says a machine that tests brake pads in the friction research lab caught fire.

According to university officials, the flames were confined to the machine alone, but smoke caused damage inside the lab.

Seivers says the lab won't be open to students for a while until it's completely cleaned up.

No one was hurt.
