NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A man is accused of setting a house on fire in New Madrid County while the family was away early Thursday morning.
According to Sheriff Terry Stevens, the fire broke out at the home early Thursday morning just outside Lilbourn, Mo. on Highway D.
Stevens says the house is total loss. He says the homeowners were not at home at the time, and were on vacation.
According to the sheriff's office, the man broke into the home, stole several items then set house on fire.
The suspect is expected to face formal charges on Friday. Stevens says the charges will include arson and stealing.
The suspect was taken to the New Madrid County Jail.
Family members tell me the couple lived in the home for 49 years, and raised their four daughters there. They say they're sad to lose memories and mementoes, but glad no one was hurt.
"It was a total loss, beautifully manicured yard and home, just a tragedy," said New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens.
