POPE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A southern Illinois man has been charged with murder in connection with a stabbing on Sunday.
Byron D. Kirkland, 61, of Benton and formerly of Herod, Illinois, was taken into custody by the Illinois State Police late Wednesday afternoon, according to Pope County State's Attorney Janet Proctor.
According to court documents filed in Pope County, Kirkland was charged Thursday with two counts of attempted first degree murder, one count of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated battery.
All six charges are felony charges.
According to the state's attorney's office, Kirkland stabbed Herschel Matheny in the chest with a knife Sunday afternoon at the home of Jacqueline C. Hicks in Pope County.
Court documents say that Kirkland also took Hicks' cell phone and pushed her to the floor.
