Business adds security after string of break-ins

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A string of pharmacy break-ins caused other businesses to heighten their security.

Marc Kester with Hi-Tech Communications said a number of businesses have called them to add security systems after the string of pharmacy break-ins in the Heartland.

Broadway Prescription Shop is one of the businesses that called.

Owner Lee Schlitt said they wanted to up the security at the shop after hearing about the break-ins at other pharmacies.

"I worked at a bank previously for 11 years before I owned the pharmacy, so we've had an extensive security system there and I was involved in a break in or robbery once, and with the rash of robberies in pharmacies we felt like it was definitely something we wanted to get done," said Schlitt.

Schlitt said they had an alarm system, but wanted to install a video camera system. So Tuesday Hi-Tech installed the system.

Schlitt says they want the system to deter anyone from breaking-in, and to help catch the crooks in case someone does.

"The biggest thing I think is just the security to staff," said Schlitt. "We feel like it's been lucky in this area there haven't been a lot of robberies that have been while the pharmacies are open, and we just want to make sure we're protected if that's going to happen, because obviously you know we can replace the drugs, we can't replace staff and employees."
