CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The FBI wants to warn computer users of a dangerous malware called a DNS Changer. If your computer has it, you might not be able to use the Internet once summer hits.

Eric Bennett at Velocity Electronics in Cape Girardeau says when criminals use DNS servers, they can control what websites you can and cannot access. He says basically it redirects you to a site the hackers want you to go to.

"Once they would infect your computer, your computer would actually talk to their DNS server, every time you tried to access a site and so you might be attempting to go to Amazon.com, and what their servers would do they could send you anywhere they wanted and so if you weren't paying attention, even though it would say Amazon.com in your web browser, you could be on a site that maybe looked like Amazon but was an affiliate of the hackers," said Bennett.

If your computer is infected and you don't get it fixed by July, when the FBI pulls their control, you won't go to any website, because your Internet won't work.

Bennett says as of Monday, there's only about 300,000 computers still affected by the malware. So, he says it's not extremely likely your computer is infected, but says you can go to DNS-OK.US to check to see if your computer has the dangerous malware.

"If you get a green like we've got here, you're good to go, if you get a red you're infected and you're going to want to attempt to use the free removal tool, or take it to a professional," said Bennett.

If you realize your computer is infected, you can access a free removal tool here.

If July hits and your Internet stops working, you can take your computer to a professional, and they can still get the malware off of the machine, and get your back online.
