SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Astronaut James Lovell and six others are being honored with the Order of Lincoln, considered the highest award granted by the state of Illinois.
Lovell was commander of the Apollo 13 mission, which almost ended in disaster.
Other honorees include Vice Admiral N. Ronald Thunman, the former commander of America's submarine force in the Pacific, and wheelchair athlete Jean Driscoll, who holds multiple world records.
The late Robert Miller, a Green Beret who was awarded the Medal of Honor, is also receiving the award.
Educator Naomi Lynn and business executive William Schnirring round out the latest class to join the Lincoln Academy of Illinois.
Gov. Pat Quinn is scheduled to present the awards Saturday at the state Capitol.
