WYATT, MO (KFVS) -

More good news for farmers in the Birds Point spillway.

An additional $2.1 million is available for flood repair from the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The new project will remove sediment and debris from the floodway and dispose of some of the excavated materials.

The NRCS is sponsoring 14 projects in the Birds Point floodway that will repair more than 900 miles of drainage ditches damaged by the floods.

The NRCS says it's important to get this land ready to farm again.

"This is some of the most productive crop land in the state of Missouri and in the nation," said NRCS state conservationist J.R. Flores.

There is no timetable for completion, although the project is expected to take several months.

The Birds Point - New Madrid Floodway levee was intentionally flooded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in May 2011 to alleviate pressure on a swelling Mississippi River and protect the town of Cairo, Illinois.  More than 130,000 acres of farmland and houses were flooded.
