Murphysboro woman killed crossing the street

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - Police are investigating a fatal truck versus pedestrian accident that happened on Friday night.

Police say that 57-year-old Viola Ganer was killed while crossing the street at the intersection of Bridge Street and Bridgewood Lane, shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday.

And some people living near the intersection saw Ganer get run over by the pickup truck.

"I was standing at my kitchen window and I just heard a boom," said Natalie Alexander. "And I see the poor lady in the air.  And she hit the ground.  And I just ran outside and I tried to wake her up, but she wasn't waking up.  So I did my best."

The Jackson County Coroner Dr. Thomas Kupferer pronounced Ganer dead at the scene at 7:40 p.m. from injuries resulting from the collision.

And according to Alexander, the driver of the truck never stopped to see what had happened.

"They just hit her and just sped off.  And you could even hear he actually pressed the gas and sped off after hitting her," said Alexander.

Police have identified who the driver of the truck is, but they are not releasing the person's name pending the outcome of their investigation.

No charges have been filed in the case at this time.
