Man charged for alleged torture of stepson

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -

A southern Illinois man has been charged with felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor child endangerment for allegedly beating and torturing his 12-year-old stepson.

James P. Jennings is being held in lieu of $400,000 bond in the St. Clair County Jail for allegedly forcing the boy to do more than 1,000 pushups and eat two screws at their Scott Air Force Base home. The boy was treated and released from a hospital.

St. Clair County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Johnson said Friday the boy has been placed in a foster home.

Johnson says the boy's mother, who is in the Air Force, wasn't at home when the acts occurred.

Authorities allege Jennings was upset the boy didn't stay in his room after being left alone while his stepfather went to work.
