"Hi, I'm Jo Ann Emerson, representing Missouri's Eighth District in Congress. The high cost of gas is a hardship for every family in the country, but in the Heartland we feel the pain more than most. We buy more fuel, the price spikes are bigger, and our economy is an intense user of energy. Everyone knows about the easy solutions and the difficult politics. But here are a few things about energy you might not realize. Back in the 1980's, we produced nine million barrels of crude oil every day in the U.S. Today, it's only 5.6 million barrels. Roughly a third of the oil we import comes from just two countries: Mexico and Canada, another third comes from OPEC. Americans are using less petroleum gasoline today than at any time in the last ten years. Here's the take-away for me: We can produce more domestic energy here in America, and we should. The more oil we get closer to home is less we get from the Middle East. And demand doesn't drive gas prices up each spring, it's government regulations, artificial supply conditions, and things we ought to better control with good energy policy. Efficient new technologies emerge every day, some of them in labs and at companies right here in Missouri. But our bridge to that energy future must be built from American fuels and energy independence. Let's not forget about the resources available to us today -- as we power an economy to lead tomorrow."
