Mo. hospital settles some of its radiation cases

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A Springfield hospital has settled more than a third of the 66 cases stemming from patients who were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.

The Springfield News-Leader reports ( ) that details of the settlements with CoxHealth have not been released. But CoxHealth says 27 cases have been settled and that 39 are still in litigation.

Hospital officials announced the radiation overdoses in February of 2010. They said that as many as 76 cancer patients were exposed to higher-than-prescribed levels of radiation during a 5-year period. Some patients received up to 70% too much radiation as the result of a human error in calibration.

CoxHealth also said Friday that measures have been taken to ensure a similar error is not made.
