CEO of Unilever expects gloomy year

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

The head of the Unilever Corporation is expecting a gloomy hear ahead.

Unilever operates the Good Humor ice cream plant in Sikeston.

The company also has factories around the world which produce everything from Dove soap to Lipton ice tea.

CEO Paul Polman says the company posted a $6.6 billion profit in 2011, but that was unchanged from the year before despite efforts to hike prices and cut costs.

Polman says in the coming year the company will struggle as it passes on higher raw material costs on to cash strapped consumers.

Polman says Unilever is also expects it to be a tough year for emerging markets which account for more than half its business.

Polman also says the European debt crisis is having an affect on Unilever's operations around the world.

He says the company faced a number of "external challenges" in the last twelve months.

That means what is happening in Europe may impact plants in America, including the Good Humor plant in Sikeston.
