International charity makes its way from Atlanta to Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

There is a big announcement for an international charity with countless volunteers in southeast Missouri. Heart for Africa is moving its headquarters from Atlanta to Cape Girardeau.

As president Jimmy Wilfert says, Swaziland is about as far away from Cape Girardeau as you can get, but he says that is no reason for the people here to not reach out to the tiny African nation ravaged by poverty and Aids.

If you ask why Cape Girardeau, Wilfert and others with the Heart for Africa organization say it must be "a God thing."

Dozens of volunteers from Cape Girardeau have traveled to Swaziland over the years and as a community, Cape Girardeau has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So when co-founders, Janine and Ian Maxwell announced they would be moving from Atlanta to Swaziland this year, Cape Girardeau seemed like the obvious place for the US headquarters.

Jimmy Wilfert, of Cape Girardeau, will take over US operations.

"The mission there is the children, with a huge HIV and Aids problem," said Wilfert. "The estimates are by 2020 if nothing is done, if no outside help comes in to help the poverty and education, the HIV and Aids, it is a dying country. The country itself will not exist any longer."

Offices will eventually be located in the Lorimont office building on Mount Auburn, and could eventually take on a couple of new employees.

Right now, Heart for Africa is getting ready for the "Celebrate Hope" event in Cape Girardeau on March 10.
