CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -
A Carbondale man is in a St. Louis hospital after being hit by a train.
According to Carbondale Police it happened Saturday at around 2:50 a.m. in the 1100 block of south Illinois avenue.
Officers say a 19-year-old man was apparently trying to jump onto a moving northbound train and fell.
The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered major injuries.
The Rev. Robert Grey, Carbondale Police Department's Chaplain says the 19 year old lost his lower right leg in the incident.
The man was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, then later transferred to a St. Louis hospital.
Police say the man's injuries are considered to be life threatening.
The victim remains hospitalized.
Meanwhile, what Carbondale's mayor said on his facebook site, "Carbondale for Joel Fritzler," about that incident is getting mixed reaction.
Mayor Joel Fritzler posted "First polar bear casualty took place this morning just after the bars closed when a 19 year old male with a .273 BAC tried to jump onto a freight train. Human bones between metal train wheels and metal train tracks usually doesn't end well. Was it worth it?"
Heartland News asked Mayor Fritzler about his comment, that some call insensitive.
"When I said is it worth it, it was basically out to everybody," said Fritzler "Is something like this worth it? Where you have a party and the purpose is to get as drunk as possible. That doesn't sound like responsible behavior on anybody's part no matter how old you are. And, that is what I was trying to get at, this is not responsible behavior."
Mayor Fritzler also said he doesn't have any problem with people partying at the Polar Bear Event.
But that they have to do so responsibly.
The Rev. Grey says the 19 year old is not an SIU Carbondale student.
