Talks of Riverfront Market in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Tuesday night community members met to discuss the idea of bringing an open air market to Cape Girardeau.

The idea would be like a farmer's market, but with music, art, and educational opportunities.

Old Town Cape and market supporters met to talk about things like potential locations or possible times.

Some said the current farmer's market in Cape is at an inconvenient time and an uninviting location.

People say they like the idea because they say it will keep money local, give families a way to spend time together, and a promote the Cape area.

"I hope to see family friendly events, and opportunities for people to spend time doing things that aren't necessarily already offered in Cape Girardeau," said Sarah Summers. "I hope that we offer an opportunity for different tourists that are in for a SEMO game, or you know maybe coming to the new casino."

"I've been to a few open air markets around the United States," said Robyn Walker. "I was very inspired first by the fresh local produce, but also by the sense of community that the market encourages."

Not everyone is for the idea. Some say they're worried how this type of market, that would add art and music, would affect local art galleries and other businesses.

The group hopes to form committees, and take the community input into account when taking the next steps towards getting the project off the ground.
