CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A unique art display in Cape Girardeau showed the reality of homelessness.

The southeast Missouri Arts Council hosted an event Saturday called "Opening Doors to the Homeless."

A number of items on display were created by people living in the Cape Girardeau area who have been affected by homelessness.

Some of the art included quilts, paintings and cards.

Organizers say it's all about raising awareness.

"We'll start by just talking about it and getting through the discomfort of talking about it," said Organizer Natalie Sandoval. "And not just homelessness, but dealing with the adequacy issues of housing, the affordability issues of housing. How as a community can we say you know what, we want to make better living conditions for everybody in our community."

The Community Caring Council also organized speakers which included those who work with the homeless, or those who've been homeless at some point in their lives.
