SEMO Food Bank goes mobile with stops during holidays

Posted: Updated:

How much do you spend on groceries each week? A lot of people can't feed their families with what they can afford to spend.

That's where the Southeast Missouri Food Bank steps in with their mobile food pantries.

The idea is that when people can't afford groceries, there's the likely possibility that they can't afford the gas to get to a food pantry if it's very far away. So these mobile food banks are designed to take the food right to the community. It's meant to fill that gap between the people and the pantry.

"We all need food," said Danny Thiele.

"It helps people through the holidays," said Janet.

"I'll take food when it's available," said Novella Howell.

Volunteers packed bags and boxes with fresh produce, meats, breads, cereals, and canned goods.

"Right now times are tough, and so everybody needs help, and this is definitely filling that gap," said Missy Rice with the Southeast Missouri Food Bank.

"Makes me feel happy, makes me feel good inside," said Janet.

"I feel pretty pleased," said Thiele.

"Makes me feel like somebody cares," said Howell.

Rice said at the end of the day at the Delta location, they served 162 families.

She says at the end of 2011, they will have had 101 mobile food banks, and served more than 20,000 families.

A need that's only getting bigger.

"The numbers are greatly growing, where we were doing about 150, those numbers are raising to 250 or 300 families that are coming out for assistance," said Rice.

"The need is out there, it is huge, and the food pantries are becoming more frequent," said Volunteer Bev Rhodes.

Rhodes says it's easy to see why people need help.

"The food prices have gotten so high that people can't afford to go and get $20 worth of food that will actually feed somebody," said Rhodes.

The food bank will host more mobile sites in the upcoming days.
