Recent steady rain across the Heartland have caused several roads to become flooded.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has asked area law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement at flood closure points on state highways.

Transportation Cabinet District 1 Spokesman Keith Todd says drivers have continued to drive around road closed signs and through flooded roadways.

According to the KYTC, drivers will be issued citations for ignoring road closures.

"We've had several instances where people have driven off into floodwaters and required emergency rescue," Todd said in a statement to the media. "This unnecessarily puts our emergency response folks in hazardous situations."

Todd says drivers attempting to drive through floodwaters too deep for travel have been a particular problem on KY 131/Said Road at the McCracken-Graves County Line between Reidland and Symsonia and KY 348/Wadesboro Road between Hardmoney and Symsonia.

Todd says driving on closed roadways can invalidate auto insurance policies.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet warns of several roads with water over them.
