FRUITLAND, MO (KFVS) -

Firefighters from Fruitland and East County fire protection districts responded to a major round bale fire.

It happened on County Road 607 west Highway V at 1 a.m. Sunday morning

Twenty firefighters from the two districts got the call shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

According to John Sachen, Public Information Officer Cape Girardeau County Firefighters Association, crews spent the next 11 hours first controlling the major fire, protecting two buildings next to the fully involved 300-bale pile.

Then crews expanded the clear area next to the building using heavy equipment brought into the scene.

Firefighters say this was one of several fires over the past several years where round bales have been in very large piles and placed closer than 200 feet from a structure.

Sachen says smoke from the bales may continue for several days and firefighters may return to the scene if the wind increases.
