CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A group of students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale wants the campus to move beyond coal.
Thursday afternoon the group held up 2,000 petitions to send a message to the administration to do away with the coal fired power plant on campus.
Instead they would like to see more sustainable energy used at SIU.
One organizer says it's an effort to protect students from the negative health effects of the coal plant.
"It's also part of an entire coal industry that, that passes 90-percent of its cost on to the US public via our health care bills, and all the environmental degradation it does," said Brent Ritzel with Beyond Coal.
The group says the university administration is moving the in the right direction.
But he adds more action and education about the harms of coal is still needed.
