Gov. Nixon orders flags at half-staff for fallen soldier

WAYNE COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered that the U.S. and Missouri flags at government buildings in all 114 counties and the City of St. Louis be flown at half-staff on Saturday, Nov. 26, to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Specialist James Roland Burnett Jr.

The Heartland soldier died Nov. 16 after enemy forces attacked his unit with an IED in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Gov. Nixon also ordered all U.S. and Missouri flags at all state buildings in Wayne County to be flown at half-staff from Nov. 27 to Dec. 2.

The funeral for Burnett will be in Lowndes, in Wayne County, on Nov. 26. 

"As we observe our national day of Thanksgiving, it is especially appropriate to thank God for the men and women who serve in our military," Gov. Nixon said. "When Missourians see the lowered flags this weekend, I would ask that they remember the sacrifice, bravery and dedication of Specialist Burnett. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they mourn for him."

The memorial service for Spc. James Burnett, Jr. will be held on Sunday, November 27 at the old high school gymnasium in Advance.  Burnett's father and step-mother live in Stoddard County.

Friends can call between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. for an informal visitation, with the ceremony to be held at 5 p.m.

The family asks that everyone attend to honor and celebrate Spc. James Burnett, Jr's life.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in the name of James Burnett, Jr. at the Bank of Advance.

The Burnett family would like to express their deepest gratitude for all the love, prayers and thoughtfulness sent their way.

Specialist Burnett was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Combat and Special Skill Badge, Basic Marksmanship Qualification Badge (Bar, Weapon: Rifle (Inscription: Rifle), Expert), and the Overseas Service Bar.
