Preps underway for Herrin community Thanksgiving dinner

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

There's still a couple days until many chow down on Thanksgiving turkey.

But one group is already cooking up dozens of birds.

Tuesday 56 turkeys went into this huge oven at the Herrin Civic Center.

The 1,027 pounds of turkey will be served Thursday during the Herrin community Thanksgiving dinner.

Coordinator Bart Mann says meal is not just for the poor, but for anyone who wants a place to celebrate the holiday.

"It's a time to come and eat a good meal and relax and sit a spell and watch television and dance and have a good time," said Mann.

Mann says come meal time about 100 volunteers will have taken part in the event, along with donations from area businesses and organizations.

The community dinner gets underway at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving day at the Herrin Civic Center.
