Dakin, former Pulaski County sheriff dies at 66

PULASKI COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A former Pulaski County Sheriff passed away on Friday evening.

Russell "Rusty"' E. Dakin age 66 of Mounds, Illinois former Pulaski County Sheriff, passed away at 8:25 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, according to Randy Jones with Jones Funeral Homes.

He died of natural causes, Jones said.

Sheriff Dakin was a former deputy for the Pulaski County Sheriff's department, where he became Pulaski County Sheriff in 1978-1986, and from 1999-2001 when he retired from the sheriff's department.

The former sheriff was a member of the Unity Baptist Church, attended the First Baptist Church in Mounds; was a Vietnam Army Veteran; a lifetime member of the Pulaski County Memorial V.F.W. Post #8891 of Mounds, where he served as a past Commander, quartermaster, and chaplain; a lifetime member of the Illinois Sheriff's Association; member of the Caledonia Masonic Lodge #47Af/Am of Olive Branch, Illinois; and a member of the American Legion.

Funeral services for Russell "Rusty" E. Dakin will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Jones Funeral Home, Villa Ridge with Rev. Buddy Walls and Rev. Tom Bridges officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mound City National Cemetery, Mound City with full military honors given by the Illinois National Guard Ritual Team and area veterans.
