CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saturday is a "no burn day," according to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
According to the department, no burn conditions are based on the following criteria:
-Atmospheric conditions that prevent smoke from rising freely.
-When excessively dry conditions exist.
-Sustained winds greater than 15 miles per hour.
-Frequent wind gusts greater than 25 miles per hour.
According to John Sachen, Public Information Officer Cape Girardeau County Firefighters Association, hunters in the woods this weekend are urged to cover all extinguished fires, including burnt out cigarettes, with several inches of dirt.
Sachen also reminds the public that after the rain stops, leaves can dry out enough within an hour to be flammable.
The forecast for Saturday calls for southerly winds at 10-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph.
