METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) - A budget shortfall in Massac County is forcing a second round of layoffs in the sheriff's department.
In 2010, a dispatcher and two deputies were laid off. As of December 7, 2011 three jailers and one deputy will be out of a job.
It is all to help fill a $500,000 (and growing) hole in the county's budget.
Sheriff Ted Holder tells me he'll have to make some adjustments within the department to make sure his full-to-capacity jail stays safe, and the citizens of his county are protected. But according to the Sheriff, something's got to give.
"About four months ago, I took a deputy off the road and made him a drug investigator and he's working full time on the meth problem. We've gotten good results out of that," said Sheriff Ted Holder. "But I'm going to have to put him back on the road so I can keep my response times down and answer calls."
The cuts bring the 29-person department down to 25.
Sheriff holder will submit his budget for 2012 next Tuesday. He says he hopes it will usher in a brighter new year, but fears more layoffs may lie ahead for his department.
