All-veteran work force program helps SIUC veterans

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

An open house today on campus aimed to connect SIUC student veterans with programs and services that can help.

There are approximately 630 veterans enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Thursday, the all-veteran work force at the center at Woody Hall reached out to help more student veterans.

Coordinators say at least 40 veterans stopped by throughout the day, and many of them were new faces.

"Our office is open 8 to 4:30 Monday through Friday and not everyone can get in to see us," said one coordinator. "But, we had this one particular day where we said it's a great opportunity to come in and have some coffee and connect with us, and we've had a good number of veterans who have never been in the office before."

The center has earned a VA grant to help student veterans pay medical, dental and counseling services at the university medical center instead of having to drive to Marion for services. That keeps veterans closer to their classes.
