Head-on crash kills southern Ill. woman

CARMI, IL (KFVS) -

A southern Illinois woman was killed Saturday afternoon following a head-on crash in Gallatin County.

It happened around 12:30 p.m. on Route 13 at McLean Street in Shawneetown.

Investigators say the a 48-year -old woman from Equality was traveling westbound on Route 13 and for an unknown reason swerved into the path of an SUV and hit it head-on.

The woman's name is being withheld pending  notification of relatives. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Gallatin County Coroner Tony Cox.

The driver of the SUV, Billy  Head, 79, of Shawneetown was taken to an Evansville hospital by Air Evac. A passenger in the SUV, Betty Head, 75, of Shawneetown was taken to a Harrisburg hospital by ambulance with major injuries.

The accident is still under investigation by an Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officer.
