Bootheel humane society preparing for surge

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - The Caruthersville Humane Society workers said they are preparing for an influx of animals next week.

Workers plan to pick up 20 to 30 dogs from the home of a Caruthersville resident.

Karol Wilcox said the home owner has several dogs that need medical attention.  The home owner was not home when Wilcox and humane society manager Erma Page went to the house today to feed and document the living condition of the animals. "The situation here is that there are 20+ animals, and certainly an awful lot of animals need to be taken care of.  Many are pregnant, some have some skin conditions," Wilcox said.

Neighbors across the street from the dog owner said for the past few weeks the owner left the animals unattended for days at a time.  "The first week we saw someone over there feeding them almost everyday, but then last week we did not see anyone over there at all," Myrtle Little said.  "We did see one of the dogs eating the other dogs."

Little said she and her neighbors called the Pemiscot Sheriff's Department and the Caruthersville Humane Society.

Wilcox said she worries that the cold weather will bring more situations like these. "The economy has been very tough, and we're seeing a lot of people who would not normally surrender their animals."

Humane society workers plan to meet with the dog owner this weekend to schedule a pick-up time next week.
