SEMO Food Bank's need increases, response does too

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Food Banks around the area are doing all they can to make sure the shelves are stocked for the holidays.

Karen Green, Executive Director of the SEMO Food Bank, says the increase in need is answered with and increase in response.

Thanks to big companies like P & G and Wal-Mart, the shelves are stocked in Cape Girardeau. In fact, Wal-Mart is helping weekly, and the pantry is feeling the benefits.

"Every week food banks go to the back door of Wal-Mart, they pick up food that might otherwise go into the landfill," said Green.  "We recover that food, it's frozen and still good to eat and we take that food and get it out to the clients that need our help."

SEMO Food Bank feeds 16 counties in Southeast Missouri, from Ste. Genevieve to the Arkansas border.

According to Green, the food bank is also receiving a new truck from Wal-Mart.  Green says towards the end of the year the need increases and she hopes the generosity will continue to do so too.
