ISP: Man on the run shoots, kills self during traffic stop

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - Illinois State Police say a Kentucky man who shot himself near Benton, Illinois after troopers stopped him on Interstate 57 near the 71 mile marker has died.

Trooper David Sneed says Timothy S. Johnson, 39, of Sturgis, Kentucky was involved in a domestic dispute Friday around 8 a.m.

Sneed says Johnson's wife was shot in the leg and Johnson took off.  A warrant was issued for Johnson for attempted murder.

ISP received a tip that Johnson was possibly in the Mt. Vernon, Illinois area.

His gold 2006 Dodge Ram with Kentucky license plates was spotted by a trooper on Interstate 57 near milepost 90.  The trooper followed Johnson's vehicle until more units arrived.

At about 12:45 p.m., several police units from several agencies stopped traffic on I-57 southbound and northbound near the Benton exit as officers stopped Johnson's vehicle.

As officers got out of their vehicles, they heard what sounded like a gunshot from inside Johnson's vehicle. Officers found that Johnson had shot himself.  Police broke and window and gave Johnson first aid.

He was take to Franklin County Hospital, but later died.
