POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

A 53-year-old Poplar Bluff man was killed in an early morning fire Friday.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers says David Buchanan most likely died of smoke inhalation in a fire that broke out around 3:50 a.m. Friday at 1401 N. 12th Street.

Buchanan was found in a back bedroom.

The State Fire Marshall is now investigating.

Fire Chief Ralph Stucker says the preliminary findings point to the fire being started accidentally.

It's believe it started somewhere in the kitchen.

"Nothing suspicious about it at all", said Chief Stucker.

A friend of the victim says she still can't believe what happened.

"I am sad, and heartbroken", said Helene Welsh.

Welsh said she helped care for Buchanan.

"He didn't really have anyone to help him," said Welsh.

Fire Chief Stucker says this is the second time the house has caught on fire within the last couple of years.

The last time the victim, Mr. Buchanan, was rescued from the basement area of the house.

On Friday, he did not make it out alive.

"It's very sad", said Chief Stucker.
