COPY-Ill. police group awards drug enforcement

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A cooperative Illinois law enforcement group has presented its annual awards to 140 federal state, county and local police officers for work on illegal drug investigations.

The Illinois Metropolitan Enforcement Group Directors-Task Force Commanders Association recognized police officers, special agents, federal prosecutors and others.

The enforcement groups and task forces are cooperative efforts among local, state and federal authorities to crack down on gangs, guns and drugs.

John Biffany is commander of the Stateline Area Narcotics Team Task Force. He says the awards represent the finest examples of how officers, police teams and drug units cooperate to keep Illinois communities safe.

He says many of the enforcement activities are funded through federal grants.
