CAVE-IN-ROCK, IL (KFVS) -
Here's a One Tank Trip perfect for someone who loves a good Fall hike or a good history lesson. This destination is set in a scenic area of the Heartland that could make the perfect movie set.
We found there's just something intriguing about Cave-In-Rock in Hardin, County. Set on the Ohio River, the 55 foot cave conjures up a sense of mystery, suspense and adventure.
"It's awesome," said Miles Sullivan, a visitor from Chicago. "There's just something cool about how it's on the Ohio."
Tourists like Miles say they enjoy not only the trails, but also the camping and opportunities to picnic.
"It's really beautiful," said Sarah Cassaro. Cassaro also traveled from Chicago.
For a different perspective, you can also take a boat ride on the river.
"I like watching the ferries and the barges," said Gloria Cap, of Sullivan, Illinois. "I just love the water."
Of course, no visit is complete without a trek inside the cave.
"It's a lot bigger than I thought," said Gloria. "It goes quite a ways back there."
We learned the cave is not only a natural wonder, but a local history lesson in and of itself.
Lots of traffic on the Ohio and a ready-made hideout provided a haven for river pirates and outlaws dating back to the 1700's. High bluffs gave the pirates a perfect place to spot their prey, while the allure of the cave served as bait for unsuspecting travelers.
"I'm anxious to learn more about the cave and the history," said Miles.
The cave served as a backdrop for a scene in the movie "How the West was Won." Plus, just in time for Halloween, some locals tell us they believe the cave is haunted by the outlaws and pirates of the past.
